Christmas in Cairo

Miss Maddie Hatter, foreign fashion reporter for the London Fog & Cog, passes the Christmas of 1898 at Shepheard's Hotel Anglaise in Cairo.

Picture the hotel's lovely Egyptian-inspired dining room all dressed up in English holiday finery while you read the excerpt below:

The hotel’s little orchestra played Christmas music at every possible occasion, until Maddie began to prowl the streets around the hotel, ever surrounded by loudly begging children just to escape from the relentless tunes. The British baron and his war-hero guest were present at every festivity. The former was fond of talking about his quest for a fabulous treasure. Maddie tried in vain to interest CJ in a serial story of his proposed adventure. Surely expeditions in search of legendary treasures would interest readers more than the exact style of ascot the royal relation had worn this week

On Christmas Eve, Baron Bodmin threw a lavish dinner party. He had caused real fir trees to be flown in from somewhere, and they blazed with real candles beside every pillar in the vast dining room, dripping wax into their sand-filled tubs and onto the floor tiles. The tables were dressed with holly and ivy and fat, red candles. A sumptuous feast of roast turkey, pan gravy, and all the traditional side dishes was brought in by the steam-driven serving carts, each one attended by a human server to pile high the pre-warmed plates. This was followed by flaming puddings with the appropriate sauces. A heavy meal indeed in the summery climate

And now, a more festive image of Madame Saffron's parlour in festive apparel, as Miss Maddie, Madame Saffron, Oberon O'Reilly, and me wish you and yours a joyful, adventurous holiday season:

It's still a thrill when people enjoy Maddie's first adventure:

"one of the most delightful tales I’ve read in a while. It’s a lovely mix of mystery, science fiction, humor, froth and adventure that can be found in the best steampunk"

Stunning pink diamond was thought to be 'crystal'

Infamous First Lady Imelda Marcos had some fabulous jewels seized when her family fled following their loss of power in the Philippines. But nobody knew this was one of them.

"Marcos’ briolette-cut or barrel-shaped pink diamond is from India’s famous Golconda region, which produced rare finds like the Hope Diamond and a 500-carat diamond that is part of the British crown jewels."

(no photo, as there are conflicting images being flung around on the web right now. I'll wait until one of them is verified as hers)

Here's the story of her seized jewels, now coming up for auction after 30 years in a government-controlled bank vault.

To find out more about fabulous gems from the Golconda region, check out the 'Bloodshot Diamond' tab for the history of these and other gems.

Teacup Tuesday

It's always teatime in Maddie's world, but twice on Tuesdays. Here's a style of teacup that's new to me, made by Blue-Pixie-Stick and shown on deviantart.

The publishing house, that is. Only six days in advance of the launch at Owls Nest Books in Calgary SW. Not that we were getting nervous or anything....

Anyway, here's the first view of the second edition. This one is lacking Robin's working drawings from the special-run conference edition (those are all gone to good homes weeks ago), but it has six lovely line drawings scattered through the text.

Soon to be available in-store at Owls Nest Books. They'll take phone or online orders, and if you can't get to the launch, ask them to hold an autographed copy for you.

More launch details coming very soon! Look for news of our wonderful musical guests!

Maddie Hatter and the Deadly Diamond

Here at last is the full cover for my upcoming Steampunk Adventure, "Maddie Hatter and the Deadly Diamond."  Artist credit goes to the immensely vibrant and talented Robin Kaplan (aka The Gorgonist).

 Back cover reads:
Miss Maddie Hatter, renegade daughter of a powerful Steamlord, is scraping a precarious living as a fashion reporter when the story of a lifetime falls into her lace-gloved hands:
Baron Bodmin, an adventurer with more failed quests than fingernails, has vanished in circumstances that are odd even for him.
While he is supposedly hunting the fabled Eye of Africa diamond in the Nubian desert, his expeditionary airship is found adrift off the coast of England. Maddie was the last reporter to see the potty peer alive. If she can locate the baron or the Eye of Africa, her career will be made.
Outraged investors and false friends complicate her quest, and a fiendish figure lurks in the shadows, ready to snatch the prize . . . at any price.
The novella is coming out October 5, 2015 in e-book and print from Tyche Books in Calgary, although some lucky folks got their hands on the special conference edition this past weekend at the wonderful 'When Words Collide' readers'/writers' festival this weekend.
